After we recovered from the busy holidays, we found a chance to take the girls sledding for the first time. Luckily, we were able to find a sled and a few scant patches of snow.

Maddie had such a fun birthday this year! The morning started out with a few presents to open, including:

a doll complete with hair stylist tools to play with

(Maddie quickly discovered to her disappointment and to mom's relief
that the scissors were only "pretend")

and a pink gaming system
(not exactly like Aujelle's Nintendo DS she had hoped for,
but mom and dad liked this price tag and educational possibilities better.)

After Maddie's favorite breakfast of German pancakes and chocolate milk, we were off to the waterpark!

Despite the blustering winds and lower temperatures, we had a lot of fun! Maddie is a brave 5-year-old and enjoyed many of the big water slides. Although, much like her mom, she didn't always enjoy the frigid water. Luckily the pool and lazy river could always warm our body temperatures up again.

Since the waterpark was more her parents' idea, Maddie got to choose where she wanted to go to dinner. And we all knew what her choice would be, since she had been asking to return there every day since her cousin Martha's birthday party in June:

Then back to the house to celebrate with cupcakes, more family, and more presents!

Perhaps the funniest moment of the day came late afternoon when we all wondered where Kennedy had disappeared. We found her asleep in Maddie's bed, complete with her bike helmet and Maddie's nightgown! What a cutie...

And here are some fun facts about Maddie at five years old:

Time-out Length, according to Madelyn: Zero Minutes (Traditionally in our household, the length of one's time-out corresponds to how many years old the child is. As we were warning her in the weeks preceeding her birthday that her time-out period was about to be increased by one minute, she informed us that her time-outs would be zero minutes when she turned five because she would be old enough to obey all of the time!)

He did it!

or should I say we did it! He survived two years of night classes, homework, and group assignments while I got a taste of what it would be like to be a single mom. It has been a long road, but hopefully it will be prove to be worth our sacrifices.

He had a difficult time deciding whether or not to walk at graduation, but he ultimately decided it would be a good opportunity to celebrate his accomplishment. His MBA department flew in Hawaiian leis for all of their graduates. We met some family for dinner beforehand, and my mom and I attended the actual graduation ceremony. The ceremony was fairly efficient, with no speeches and a comparatively fast distribution of diplomas. I was able to enjoy it more since family members kindly offered to watch the girls.

Now we are enjoying the opportunity reacquainting ourselves with each other and remembering what life is like as a "normal" family. On Aaron's last night of class, I explained to Madelyn that Daddy was going to be done with school forever, so he would be home with us every night. The next morning she asked me when Daddy would be done with work forever, so he could spend every day with us too.:)

An Update

I decided an update about Kennedy was in order, since several things have already changed in the last few weeks.

A few interesting things I forgot to post last time:

Latest accompishment: using the potty (She loves to sit on it and she can really make herself go! This gives me hope that she'll be easier to train than her sister was, although I'm not ready to really potty train her yet.)
Favorite hobby: collecting things (i.e. nail clippers, hair bows, rubber ducks. She insists on carrying around as many as she can hold in her little hands. She likes to sleep with them too.)
Favorite songs: "BBCs" (ABCs), "Kinkle Arr" (Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star), and "EEO" (Old McDonald). (However, you usually need to ask her if she wants to sing a song. Otherwise, she will yell "BOP!" for you to stop singing.)
Kennedy's NEW favorite show: "Doo doo are oooo" ("Scooby doo, where are you?")

As for the sleeping dilemma, we found the answer: a crib tent. I know it looks silly, but it truly works! Kennedy is sleeping so much better now, and we are all happy.:)

After a long blogging drought caused by another busy tax season and Aaron's last semester of school all while trying to sell our home, we are back! And we are happy to share the highlights of Kennedy's second birthday!

Although Kennedy has definitely hit the "terrible twos," she is still our sweet little girl. Here are a few current things about Kennedy:

Nicknames: Kenna, Ken
Favorite foods: macaroni and cheese, fruit
Favorite things to do: snuggle, read books, play with Maddie, color, dance, take baths, swing
Least favororite things to do: go to sleep, go to nursery or anywhere without her parents, have a bow in her hair
Funniest sayings: "Bop!" (she always tells us to stop singing), "Mammeye nice!" ("Maddie, be nice!")
Favorite toys: rubber ducks, little people castle set, dress-up, dolls, bubbles
Favorite tv show: "Neh-nehs" (Little Einsteins)
Favorite movie: "Deh-dehs" (Princess, as in Enchanted) and "Ooool" (High School Musical, thanks Alli)

For over two months now, Kennedy has been climbing out of her crib. (I think both of my daughters inherited their father's climbing genes). As the pictures below show, sleeping has become much more of a struggle lately.

She refuses to sleep in her crib or even in Maddie's bed, but instead, she prefers the floor. Taking away her pacifier when she turned two only made the problem worse. But since we hope to be moving soon, we are trying to endure it until we move to a new home with her own bed and a new routine. It can't come soon enough though!

Until then, this may be the norm...

Bahamas Cruise Vacation: Day 6

Day 6 of our vacation was the last day of our cruise.

We said goodbye to our stylish room,

And did a lot of waiting around.

After we disembarked the ship, we rented a car and drove to the Kennedy Space Center. We were surprised at how much there was to see and do there! You could easily spend a day or two at the visitor's center walking around, watching informative movies narrated by Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise, and going on the bus tour. The center helped me appreciate all of the dedication, hard work, and lives sacrificed for space exploration--something I've always taken for granted and never thought much about before. If you are ever in the Orlando/Cocoa Beach area, we highly recommend visiting Kennedy Space Center!

Bahamas Cruise Vacation: Day 5

The fifth day of our vacation involved a relaxing day at sea, which included some of the following:

Bahamas Cruise Vacation: Day 4

Day 4 of our trip brought us to the capital city of the Bahamas, Nassau!

We began with a water taxi to Paradise Island.

The tour guide pointed out the homes of the rich and famous.
I believe this one was once owned by Charlie Chaplin,
and is now owned by Nicholas Cage.

We toured the grounds of the unbelievable Atlantis resort.

The "bridge" part of the hotel (above Aaron's head) is called the Michael Jackson Suite. It costs $25,000 a night to rent it out with a minimum 4-night stay. The suite is booked for the next five years!

Bahamas Cruise Vacation: Day 3

Our first stop on our Bahamas cruise was Freeport island in the Bahamas.

Our day began with a taxi ride to Lucaya Beach.

Aaron enjoyed a little snorkeling
while the rest of us sunbathed on the beach.

Nate and Andrea got the crazy idea to go parasailing! We rode along in the boat to a platform that was floating in the ocean.

far too rational to go with with him!

would make the parasailer drop down to barely touch the water.

After a day at the beach, we enjoyed lunch and shopping at Port Lucaya.

Bahamas Cruise Vacation: Day 2, Part II

Before boarding the ship, Nate and Andrea were kind enough to share their motion sickness patches with us. Aaron couldn't help teasing Nate about how funny they looked, but he ended up putting one on himself a few hours later!

Once we got settled into our rooms, Andrea and I attended a shopping seminar held in one of the lounges. The designated shopping expert shared some advice on shopping in the Bahamas. He held a raffle at the end of the show for the hundred or so people in attendance, and my name was drawn! I won this 1/2 carat diamond and sapphire necklace!

I was especially excited since I thought this might make up for Aaron losing his wedding ring at the Cocoa Beach hotel. Luckily, we found his ring several days later in my makeup bag! I have no idea how it got there. . .:)

I discovered my nightly dessert of the famous Chocolate Melting Cake, which made an excellent fondue dip when paired with a tropical fruit plate. As any cruise veteran knows, one of the best parts of a cruise is the food! And you can order as many appetizers, entrees, or desserts as you would like. Right, Nate?:)

After dinner every evening, we enjoyed a show in the lounge, which mostly consisted of comedians. Some were better than others, and we only heard two Mormon jokes (something about polygamy and non-drinking).

Although our ship, the Carnival Sensation, was plenty big and spotlessly clean, the decor was a sight to behold! We learned that our cruise was the last for the ship before being dry-docked for five weeks and undergoing $70 million in renovations. So the ship's next passengers should enjoy the upgrade.

Bahamas Cruise Vacation: Day 2, Part I

Our second day began with a morning at the beach.

The cooler ocean temperatures didn't stop Aaron from enjoying a swim.

Cocoa Beach wasn't crowded at all in January.

We found a live jellyfish on the beach that was moving
all over the place! Check out the video clip below.

As the designated trip planner/accountant, I was able
to get us this awesome Buick Enclave at a ridiculously low price.
We loved driving around town in it and were sad to give it up.

Bahamas Cruise Vacation: Day 1

Here's my attempt to journal one of our favorite vacations yet, our trip to Orlando for a cruise to the Bahamas!

We left in the wee hours of the morning and were very grateful to finally take off after waiting over an hour on the plane for a delayed departure. The second engine wouldn't start due to the frigid temperatures (kind of important, eh?), but luckily they were able to warm it up, start the engine, de-ice the plane, and we were off!

Two things surprised us when we landed at the Orlando airport hours later:

The long line of elderly people in wheelchairs waiting to board the plane we were disembarking, and
The warm, humid temperature!

We wondered why we choose to live in Utah when such tropical climates exist in this very country in January! It was heavenly.

We spent the first night close to the port at Cocoa Beach.

Aaron & Nate were excited that our hotel was right next to the beach!

After driving around for an hour trying to find a quaint, local restaurant we could all agree upon for dinner, our famished stomachs convinced us to give in to Aaron's request of the ever-exciting and unique Applebee's.

Unfortunately for Aaron, the restaurant no longer offered his favorite meal, the infamous Chicken-fried Chicken. He was, however, able to find a meal he deemed equally as delicious, a steak and shrimp concoction.

Here are some pictures and video of Maddie's first dance recital. It is a few weeks late, but cute nonetheless!

In the video you can see Maddie on the far left. She did much better than I thought she would! You'll notice she watches her teacher who is hiding in the wings, and she looks down at the ground frequently to make sure she is still standing exactly on her spot. Sorry it's a little shaky--I was laughing a lot! Thanks to everyone who came! (You'll want to turn off my blog's music before you watch the video.)

Why You'll No Longer Find Scissors at the Hansen Home...

On days like these, I'm grateful to have a family blog. Rather than screaming or crying at these moments, I collect myself enough to grab my camera, recognizing that one day I will be laughing at this. And by posting such entries on my blog, all of you can enjoy a good laugh. I'm not at the laughing point yet.

I should have learned my lesson last March, when Maddie gave Kennedy her first unintentional haircut with Dad's razor. I really should have learned the lesson last month when Maddie gave her sister her first intentional haircut with the scissors she retrieved from their former spot, the kitchen drawer.

I did learn that the scissors should no longer be so easily accessible, and I found a good hiding spot for them. Unfortunately, I forgot to put them away today. I left them on the bathroom counter.

Here is what I discovered when I went to check on Maddie's unreasonably long potty break:

Her beautiful dark curls scattered on the floor and in the trashcan! She chopped several inches off each side of her hair, and it looked even worse when I took out the ponytails. I discovered a little patch she cut much closer to the scalp with only two inches of hair still attached. I wanted to cry since it took us four years to get her hair so long and full. She was as bald as Kennedy when she was that age, and we didn't even know she had curly hair until she was 2 1/2 years old. In a matter of five minutes, two years worth of hair was gone.

Maddie explained that she wanted to have short hair like Kennedy. She also wants to be a "haircutter" like her Aunt Aujelle and tells me so all the time. I obviously told her she CANNOT cut hair, and she got a long, LONG timeout in her bedroom while I tried to figure out what to do. Luckily her Aunt Aujelle came to the rescue. Here's what she looks like now:

A Hansen Halloween

We're happy to report that after many months of planning, countless hours of painting and gluing, and only a few hot-glue-gun burns and knife cuts, Aaron pulled off our family Halloween costumes with much success! Here is the result:

Maddie LOVED being Belle and looked just like her. In fact, at her ballet Halloween party, some other girls saw her and excitedly exclaimed, "Look Mom! It's BELLE!!!"

Aaron decided on our 2008 Halloween costumes back in November of 2007! (Those of you who know Aaron know that he enjoys Halloween even more than he does Chrismas.) Maddie's dress was borrowed. Aaron made his mask all by himself! My mom helped him sew the gold lapel onto a DI jacket, and his gloves were left over from his wolf costume last year.

Aaron began work on Kennedy's Chip costume over the summer when he bought a plastic flower pot and hollowed out the bottom. She wanted nothing to do with it at first, so he spent several days just getting her used to the idea. He discovered it helped to have Maddie wear the Chip costume a few times so that Ken would think it was fun.

Several months ago, Aaron found the Mrs. Potts costume for sale on craigslist for $40. He visited the owner's home to check out the costume, but was turned off because he immediately smelled cigarette smoke and pets. He told the owner such, since she had listed the costume as coming from a "smoke-free, pet-free home." He said he would have to think about it, and she ended up giving the costume to him for free since she was moving and wanted to get rid of it!

We've enjoyed the unusually warm temperatures here for the month of October. It was the warmest Halloween we ever remember, and the girls had fun trick-or-treating.

Kennedy only went to a few houses, and then stayed home to help me pass out candy. She would sneak fistfulls of suckers and go hide them in various places in the house. So far, I've found them in her diaper bag and in a kitchen drawer, and I'm wondering where I'll find them next...

Aaron's mask started out as a Chewbacca mask that he originally tried to paint to look like the beast. Here is what it looked like one week before Halloween:

He wasn't too happy with the painted mask, so he decided he needed real fur. I think he did a great job! What do you think?

Halloween at Gardner Village

On Friday, we went with some cousins to Gardner Village for their annual Halloween festivities. Apparently it is a popular place to visit this time of year, because there were hundreds of other people there that afternoon! There was plenty of fun for everyone though. Maddie especially loved all of the "Jack" music (The Nightmare Before Christmas) as well as getting her face painted.

We waited in a very SLOW line to get these two cute faces painted,
and I know Maddie's butterfly lasted less than two hours before it was
smeared onto the couch pillow. It was worth it though--I think...:)

For some reason, I didn't think to take any pictures of the
cute witch decorations that were all over the place. Blake was
especially fascinated with a witch on a bicycle that
appeared to be flying over a little stream.

And thanks to everyone for all of the birthday wishes! It made the day extra special!!

Camping 101

Last weekend we took Madelyn camping for the first time. Aaron and I have been camping a few times since we've been married, but we've never dared to go since we've become parents. I figured the kiddos were hard enough to take care of at my own house--I had no desire to try to supervise them for 24 hours in the wilderness.

Somehow Aaron managed to change my mind--the temptation of dutch oven peach cobbler had something to do with it--and we planned a little overnight adventure in American Fork Canyon. Alli and Cory came with us, and we left Kennedy behind with Grandma.

Each of us learned some valuable lessons essential to wilderness survival:

Cory learned that the mountains get chilly at night,
and one should always pack long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks.

Alli learned that she needs to help her husband pack his clothes.

Aaron learned that firewood burns faster
than you might think. Bring extra.

I learned that you need to bring
a can opener and nonstick cooking spray.

And Maddie learned that she LOVES camping!

Overall, we had a lot of fun despite several torrential downpours. Thanks to Papa's van, we didn't get too soaked, and we might have beat the world record in time it takes to pack up a campsite (which we had to do as soon as we woke up the next morning)! I think we all want to try it again next summer, and maybe we'll even take Kennedy next time...

Our Little Ballerina

Maddie loves her new ballet class! On the first day of class, she got to be the teacher's helper-- you can see her up front with the teacher. A lot of other girls from our neighborhood are taking dance lessons here too, but they are all in different classes. Maddie will enjoy meeting some more new friends. She's especially excited about a girl in her class named "Kennedy!"

Moms are only allowed to come the first class of every month, which I can now understand why. When I was there, the other moms were talking so loudly to each other that the kids could hardly hear their teacher! Maddie came home last week very excited to show me everything she is learning. I love that she is enjoying it so much!

Yesterday I got to attend the wedding of my childhood best friend, Hailey Smith. It was great to see her and her family again since I hadn't seen them in several years. Everything was so elegant and beautiful. Congratulations to Hailey and Steve!

Maddie turns 4! - Part II

It took a while to recover from the birthday party with eight 3-& 4-year-olds, but we're back with part II of Maddie's fun-filled 4th Birthday!

First, here are some facts about Madelyn:

Born: Friday, August 6, 2004 at 2:51 AM (after 31 miserable hours of labor)

Favorite color: red (Red is also her dad's favorite color, which is why Maddie likes to refer to him as "Matching-favorite-colors.")

Favorite food: crepes (that her daddy makes, with chocolate filling of course)

Favorite movie: Toy Story (the first one)

Favorite mischievous act: sneaking fistfuls of cake! (when will she outgrow this? and when will I learn she can't be trusted alone in the same room as a cake?!?)

Favorite mispronounced words: "crash cran" (trash can), "yolee bar" (granola bar), "skabetti" (spaghetti)

Dislikes: tomatoes, crust, and sun in her eyes (see previous June post, "Heard at the Hansen home")

Maddie's Quote of the day (said with great enthusiasm) : "Now that I'm 4 years old I get four-minute time-outs!!!"

Today is Madelyn's 4th birthday! Every morning for the past week she has awoken with the question: "Is today my birthday?!?" This morning we finally got to answer, "Yes, it is!"

The day began with some fun presents from Mom, Dad, and Kennedy. Then Maddie got to go out to breakfast with her dad and to pick out some balloons for her party.

Her princess party has been in the works for a while now, and it was a great success!

Pioneer Day

Last week I spontaneously decided to take the girls to the 24th of July "Float Preview Party" at the South Towne Expo Center. I had heard about it on TV and decided it was a nice air-conditioned alternative to a traditional parade. We had never been before, but I was pleasantly surprised! Maddie loved looking at all of the floats, and they even had free face-painting and balloons. I was completely impressed by all of the details in so many of the floats. Bravery with Hair

So about two weeks ago I got really brave and got my hair cut shorter than I've ever had it before. I'm putting up some pictures so you don't have to look so shocked the next time you see me. I think I like it, but about an hour after the cut I was asking myself, "What did I just do?!?"

Aaron likes it a lot more than I thought he would. He says it's like he has a new wife. (I guess that is a good thing?)

I like it as a nice change, but I'm still trying to learn how to style it. And I'm missing not being able to pull it back into a ponytail. I probably won't keep it this short, so here's some pictures to prove my bravery:

Big Girl Kennedy - Part II

It's so fun to watch Kennedy act so much older now that she is a professional walker! Her favorite thing to do this month is to grab a book and find her own seat, which is one of three places:

1. Her Elmo chair

2. the stairs (which scares me since she hasn't completely mastered these yet!)

3. or, her favorite place, my lap (pictures to come...)

I just love how babies this young love "reading" books. And it is just too cute when Kennedy picks out a book, finds me wherever I am in the house, and backs herself up in reverse to plop down in my indian-style lap. I always try to stop whatever I'm doing if possible so that I can take a moment to read to her, because she is just too cute to resist! I hope she always loves reading as much as she does now!

We Love to See the Temple

Last week we were able to watch as the Angel Moroni was placed on top of the Draper temple. We were surprised at how big the statue is! You can see in some of the pictures that the statue is quite a bit larger than the men hanging in the harness from the crane.

Maddie is excited to be able to go inside the temple when it is all finished!

Destructive Boredom

I heard the term "destructive boredom" on a Supernanny episode, and it perfectly describes Maddie's Sunday.

First of all, as I was trying to prepare my primary lesson Sunday morning, Maddie decided to cover herself with ballpoint pen tattoos. Take a look.

Later that evening, we had our friends Nate & Andrea over for dinner. Maddie always loves playing with their son Carter.

After dinner, the two kids ran downstairs to "go hide." When we didn't hear or see them again for a while, I decided I had better go check on them. I went downstairs to the toy room/computer room, and the door was closed. I tried to open it, but it wouldn't budge. I pushed a little harder, and this is what I found:

The two of them had dumped every toy and toy container in front of the door to barricade themselves inside! I couldn't believe it. Luckily I found it too funny to get mad. And they were really good helpers at cleaning it all up.

Fourth of July

Our Fourth of July celebrations began Thursday evening with our city's parade. Aaron had school that night, but I loaded the girls into their wagon, trekked a few blocks in the 100 degree heat, and found a great, shady spot sitting with some neighbors. Maddie hadn't been to a parade since she was a baby and was a little hesitant about running for the candy. Her neighbor friends quickly taught her the ropes though, and they were so good about sharing with her. In the end, she ended up with more candy than she got at Halloween!

Fourth of July morning we went boating with the Murray family at Utah Lake. We had a great time since it wasn't very crowded or too hot yet.

Swimming Fun

Now that the weather has finally warmed up here in Utah, we've enjoyed our first few times swimming this summer. Maddie loves swimming around in her floaties. Ken just loves being in the water--whether it's the bathtub or the swimming pool.

Kennedy's Mischief

Normally Kennedy is a great sleeper. When she is tired, we just have to rock her a few minutes (or even seconds) with her head on our shoulder, lie her down in her crib with her pacifier ("pass") and her little security blanket ("kee-kee"). (These are hand-me-down Murray nicknames. Ken can't say them yet, but she knows exactly what they are and will fetch them if asked.) She'll usually go to bed without a peep.

However, it seems as though she may be transitioning from two naps to one. It's hard to tell what with the later summer nights, new molars coming in, and her getting over a second and more vicious case of croup. But here is what she does when we put her down to sleep and she decides she is not tired after all:
She doesn't usually cry but instead throws all of her blankies and pacifiers out of the crib. Then she yells out to us until we come pick them up for her. She gets pretty excited when we come back in the room. As Maddie would say, "She's a stinker, but she sure is cute!"

I took the girls to get their pictures taken last week. Luckily my mom was there to help because getting a newly-walking one-year-old to stand/sit still for pictures proved to be quite difficult! We were surprised that any of Kennedy's pictures turned out at all--but there are a few cute ones. It's a good thing because I'm not going through this picture-taking ordeal again any time soon!

I hope all the mothers out there enjoyed their special day of a little extra appreciation and attention. Aaron celebrated with me by taking me out on a surprise date night to the Melting Pot restaurant Friday night. The food was delicious and we definitely recommend it! He also cooked a yummy breakfast for me this morning, gave me 2 dozen beautiful roses, and gave me a new smoothie maker (from the girls:)).

12 Month Check-Up

Kennedy had her 12-month check-up last week. She weighs 20 lbs. 10 oz., which puts her at 50% for her weight. She is 30 inches tall, which is taller than 75% of girls her age. So, she continues to grow tall like her sister, but weighs a few pounds less than Maddie did at her age. Look at how good she is at standing!

Today's post is all about Kennedy! We can't believe our little Kenna is one year old! Here are some things you may not know about Kennedy:

Doing Our Part

We at the Hansen household take our nation's economic struggles to heart. We aren't ones to sit idly by while watching the country sink further into a recession. After some thoughtful analysis, we decided on a course of spending that would help stimulate the nation's economy. Here's what we purchased:

Those of you who know us well know that we aren't usual spendthrifts. The truth of the matter is that after several months of slow decline, our furnace finally kicked the bucket. And what with the unusually cold spring we've been enduring (yes, there was snow on our lawn this morning!), we couldn't put off a replacement. Luckily my parents were kind enough to let us camp out at their place for the weekend while our furnace was out. The pictures below show how much fun Kennedy had at Grandma & Papa's house, and Maddie couldn't believe she was lucky enough to have a 3-night sleepover!

And Aaron somehow convinced me that we should replace our perfectly fine television and hand-me-down entertainment center with a flat-screen LCD TV and new entertainment center. And thanks to an awesome accountant we have(he he), our tax refund was able to cover all of the purchases.

Easter Highlights

Our Easter celebrations began with an Easter egg hunt at the city park. It was quite the experience! Hundreds of people were gathered at the field, lined up behind the yellow tape. We were at a special section for 3 to 5 year olds. We heard a loud horn, followed by all of the parents yelling, "Go!", "Run!", "Get the eggs!" The little children ran frantically all over the field, passing eggs close by to get the one they spotted farther away. Several kids around us immediately began crying since the chaos overwhelmed them. I tried to videotape some of the hunt, but within 15 seconds, the field was clear of eggs and swarming with people. Luckily I had sent Aaron out to follow Maddie or else we would never have found her again in the huge crowd. For being only 3 years old, Maddie was a successful egg hunter--she gathered seven eggs in the commotion. We had a lot of fun and plan to make it a tradition!

Disney on Ice--Princess Wishes

When we heard that Disney on Ice was coming to town again, we quickly bought tickets for me to take Maddie. She had fun when we took her last year, but this year was going to be a special "Princess Wishes" show! Maddie has discovered the Disney princesses this last year, and she has been counting down the days in anticipation until "Disneyland Ice"--as she likes to call it.

First Haircut

Now normally, my balding little babies don't require a haircut until closer to age two. But it looks like Maddie decided to take the initiative. This bald spot has really baffled me all day, and it wasn't until after consulting a few other opinions that I have decided it definitely looks shaved. Grandma asked Maddie if she put the razor on Kennedy's head and she replied, "Me and mommy think so." But Maddie truly doesn't seem to remember doing it. I don't think she knows that razors can cut (although I thought I had taught her not to touch it!), and she might have been pretending to comb Kennedy's hair. But it seems we will never know for sure exactly what happened. I just hope her hair can grow back quickly!

Tax season is definitely upon me, so the posts may be few and far between these next few weeks. For those of you who haven't heard, I've started working for a different accounting firm this year. Last tax season, I worked right up until tax day, then I had Kennedy and took the rest of the year off. Last fall I was approached by another company and offered a job where I work entirely from home. I decided it would be a good opportunity, and so far it is working out great. I have a really nice computer setup at home as well as some reliable babysitter help. It is great not to have to drive downtown anymore and to have the flexibility to work whatever hours I want. And although I'm stressed and busy now, I know it will only last for six more weeks. I'll continue to work a little during the off-season, but it will be much more relaxed. I certainly can't complain since I'm not aware of any other jobs that can give you a 9 month maternity leave, let you work from home whatever hours you want, and pay you enough to make you want to keep working! And with that, we're officially counting the days until April 15th...

I wanted to wish my favorite husband a very happy 28th birthday! These pictures were taken at 7:00 AM this morning as he was on his way to a symposium, then back to the office, then to an evening of school. Doesn't sound like a very fun birthday, but we'll try to celebrate some more tomorrow! I did try to surprise him a little by decorating his car with window writing and some balloons. Even Kennedy decided to wake up an hour earlier than usual (at 6:30 AM) just to wish her daddy a happy day! We love you Aaron!

Nine Month Checkup

Kennedy had her 9 month checkup last Friday. She weighs 19 lbs. 1 oz. (60%) and is 28 1/2 inches long (75%). The doctor also confirmed she has croup. The poor little thing has had one illness after another since Thanksgiving!

I used to think Kennedy was such an easygoing, mild baby. However, her temperament has changed in the last few months, and she definitely has a stubbornly independent side. Here is a picture of a what a successful mealtime is like these days.

Kennedy HATES to wear a bib, so she quickly discards of it at the beginning of a meal. Also, she much prefers to feed herself. As soon as anyone comes at her with a spoon, she vigorously shakes her head "NO!" from side to side. If the feeder is lucky enough to sneak a taste of the pureed food into her mouth, there's a 50/50 chance she might change her mind and decide to cooperate. If so, beware of the grabby hands that go after the spoon every chance she can get. On the other hand, if she does not enjoy the food sample, her head shaking continues along with tightly pursed lips. She already has a strong preference for big people foods--these days her favorites are yogurt, graham crackers, and string cheese.

Along with beginning to crawl, Kennedy has also said her first words! A few weeks ago, she began saying "Mama" whenever she wanted me, and she has repeated it many times since. Tonight was a milestone in that she actually reached from me to Aaron and said "Dadad" two different times! In the past, whenever we played the game "Who will she reach for?" I have always won. It looks like I have some competition now.

Elder Alex Murray

We have been anxiously waiting for my brother Alex's mission call to come these past few weeks. With the passing of President Hinckley, it took a little longer than we had anticipated. Yesterday, the envelope arrived.

Alex will be serving as a representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California San Diego mission!!! Anyone who knows my family will understand how hilarious and unbelievable this mission call is! Both of my parents grew up in San Diego. All of my grandparents live there as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Several times a year for as far back as I can remember, my family has made the requisite pilgrimage down to southern California. What's more is my sister Alli and her husband Cory might very likely be moving to San Diego in the fall so he can attend medical school at UCSD. I can't think of a better place for Alex to serve!

Another interesting fact is that Alex is probably among the first batch of missionaries to be called by President Monson. Congratulations Alex!

Snow Day

Could it be possible? Another foot of snow?!? We girls awoke this Sunday morning to find snowpack covering our windows, and a peek out the front door revealed near blizzard conditions. Aaron had left an hour earlier for Bishopric meetings, and I couldn't even see his tiretracks in the driveway. Not much later, he telephoned with the news that church was cancelled for the day. When he arrived home, there was so much snow in the driveway that the car got stuck and couldn't even make it to the garage.

Aaron joined other men from the neighborhood with shovels, snowblowers, and snowplows attached to ATVs and spent the next hour or two clearing driveways, sidewalks, and roads. Maddie couldn't resist the fun and joined in for a little while. Aaron measured over 23" of snow in our backyard (and there were only a few inches leftover from previous storms). I know the snow is good for Utah's drought conditions, but I think we've all had enough already!

An emeritus General Authority spoke at my Uncle Scott's funeral a few weeks ago. He said that in his experience, there are three significant life events at which the Spirit speaks to us most strongly: the birth of a new baby, a temple sealing, and a funeral ceremony. Yesterday was a uniquely spiritual day for us since we were able to witness both our prophet's funeral services as well as the temple sealing of my friend Joni to her husband Brock. It was such a beautiful yet brisk day, and we were grateful to be able to experience it all.

Congratulations to Brock and Joni! Brock was baptized a member of the LDS church one year ago, and the two were married last June. We're so happy that they were able to make their marriage an eternal one yesterday, and we're thankful we were able to attend their ceremony.

Kennedy Crawls!

Kennedy has been scooting backwards and crawling in place for a few weeks now, but two days ago she finally was able to move her little self forward. In the last 48 hours she has happily realized she can now go wherever she wants! She is quite good at sitting up from her crawling position, and she is now trying to pull herself to standing with any furniture she can get her cute little hands on.

Maddie has been working on filling her marble jar by using the potty for several months, and her reward was a day at Disneyland! Despite the long lines and crowds of people, she had tons of fun. Everytime someone asks her what her favorite part was, she has a different answer: the Dumbo ride, the "Jack & Sally" mansion (Nightmare Before Christmas--she wasn't even scared), Buzz Lightyear ride, Sleeping Beauty's storytime, or "Kickey Mouse" to name a few.

We spent so much time standing in line that I worried it wasn't everything she'd hoped for. Luckily that wasn't the case. As soon as Maddie woke up the next morning, she said, "Mommy, can we go to Disneyland again today please?! I'll go potty again!" I think it was a success.

We learned two important lessons from the experience. First, anyone desparate to potty train their child needs a whole bunch of marbles, an empty jar, and a promise for Disneyland. Second, don't ever visit the happiest place on earth during Christmas break, unless you like standing for hours in lines among thousands of people. It was worth it though!

As you can see, Cory was really excited for the day!

Uncle Scott

My uncle Scott Olsen passed away unexpectedly in his sleep a few days before Christmas. I hadn't seen him much in the past few years since he divorced my aunt, but his passing brought to my mind the many fun memories with him from my childhood. He was a cheerful, fun-loving guy, and I wish I could have seen him one more time. My heart especially aches for my cousins who have now lost their father. Thank goodness for the knowledge that they will be with him again someday.

The past two Sundays Maddie's nursery teachers have given me reports on cute/funny things she did:

Two Sundays ago, the nursery leader announced that whoever came and quietly sat on the floor would be able to dress up in nativity costumes. Maddie was the only child to respond; she quickly went and sat down, trying to be as quiet as possible. Her nursery leaders said they'd never seen her so quiet or still and thought they better let her dress up before she passed out from excitement! Maddie discovered the joys of dressing up last month, and her favorite costume this month is Mary. In the picture below, she dressed herself up and found her own baby Jesus.

Last Sunday, the nursery class was talking about Jesus, and Maddie proclaimed, "Jesus put a baby in my mommy's tummy, and it didn't even hurt!" (No, I am not pregnant--she is referring to Kennedy. Although she has told me several times in recent weeks that she wants a baby brother, I have told her she has to wait until she is older. )

Happy Thanksgiving & Anniversary

We enjoyed celebrating both Thanksgiving and our 6-year anniversary this past week. After bouts of the stomach flu and a miserable cold/cough that have spread throughout our family, we are most grateful for our health. Maddie had lots of fun playing with her cousin Martha, and we enjoyed a few days with Aaron at home with no school or work.

Called To Serve

We were excited to hear today that Aaron's parents received their mission call. They will be serving an LDS mission in Singapore! We never guessed such an exotic location, and they leave so soon--December 10. We love them and will miss them while they are so far away, but we know the family will be blessed from their service.

Six Month Checkup

Kennedy had her six month checkup last week. She weighs 17 lbs 4 ounces and is 26 1/2 inches long. Both her weight and her height put her in the 80th percentile, and her head is in the 70th percentile. She is a healthy, happy baby!

Even though Maddie only had to get one flu shot, she cried more than little Kennedy did with her four vaccinations.

A pirate's life for me! Maddie enjoyed herself at cousin Garrett's pirate birthday party yesterday. She decided to share her fun pirate gear with Kennedy this morning. She dressed Kennedy herself, but was having a little trouble with the eye patch when I found the two of them. I decided to finish the job.

Kennedy didn't seem to mind too much. She discovered the sword is great to chew on since her first tooth broke through her bottom gum yesterday!

Most often these days when either one of the girls wakes up in the morning, she invariably wakes up her sister. If Kennedy is the first to wake, she coos or squeals until Mattie is roused. The video below demonstrates what Maddie does if she is the first to awaken.

A Hansen Halloween

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf? Well, two of the three little pigs had their moments of fright.

And, we are happy to announce that after endless hours of gluing miniscule cotton particles onto a white jumpsuit in attempts to create his "sheep's clothing," Aaron won the grand prize of $100 cash at his company costume contest!

I have come to learn that if Maddie is alone and quiet for more than a few minutes at a time, she is definitely getting into some kind of trouble. Today, she managed to climb up to the medicine cabinet in the bathroom, grab some nail polish, and give herself a pedicure. Here are some pictures of the crime.

Peekaboo Kennedy

Kennedy began doing this over a month ago, and at first I couldn't believe she actually knew what she was doing. Since then, she has repeated this form of "Peekaboo" so many times--it is her favorite way of getting my attention. She has become quite the little performer.

When Kennedy is lying on the floor, she grabs the nearest blanket or article of clothing and pulls it over her face. She usually flails her arms and kicks her legs in excitement and anticipation. Then, when the timing is right, she grabs the cloth and pulls it off of her face, displaying a big grin. What a smart little cutie!

Spontaneity in St. George

Friday afternoon we received an unexpected invitation to join my parents on a weekend trip to St. George. We decided we needed some more spontaneity in our lives and quickly packed our bags. We love staying at "Mimi & Pops" vacation home (my dad's aunt & uncle). The luxurious house has beds for more than 20 people and features breathtaking views from its location atop the bluff above the outlet malls.

Grandma Talbot

My great grandmother, Vivian Talbot, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2007. We will miss her but are grateful to have known her and for her long life of 90 years. I'm glad I got to see her a few months ago to get a five generation picture for little Kennedy. We know Grandma Talbot is at peace now and with other loved ones who have already passed on.

Firefighter Maddie

Maddie went on her first fieldtrip yesterday with her preschool class. They are learning about the letter "F" and visited the firestation. She had lots of fun and loves wearing her firefighter hat while pulling her dalmation in tow. She says she wants to be a "firefighter girl" when she is bigger.

Yesterday, Maddie decided to roll Kennedy up in her playmat like a taco. Then Maddie ran to get a blanket to roll herself up too.

Four Month Checkup

Kennedy had her four month check-up yesterday. She weighs 15 pounds 5 ounces (which is the 85th percentile) and is 26 inches long (95%). Her head is in the 75th percentile. So, overall, she is a healthy, big girl. Luckily she has no health concerns since in the last week we have discovered Maddie has a severe walnut allergy as well as a skin disease called psoriasis.

Below, Dr. Maddie is giving Kennedy a check-up herself. Having poked and prodded Kennedy all over, Dr. Maddie concurs with Dr. Memmott's clean bill of health.

First Day of School

Maddie started preschool last week. She loves it, mom appreciates the break, and Kennedy enjoys having mom all to herself.

Kennedy's Month-In-Review

Since we've been busy remodeling our kitchen, starting Aaron's graduate school, and preparing Madelyn for preschool this past month, here are some catch-up pictures.

Twice now I have found Kennedy holding on to the side of her cradle & the bumper pad in her sleep.

We introduced Kennedy to her exersaucer this last week, and she seems to enjoy it. Maddie loves to spin her baby sister around and around in circles until I catch her and give her a time out.

Kennedy's absolutely favorite baby item is her sling. She hardly makes a peep when she is in it, and I love having her close to me while having my hands free. We've been using it more and more often these days, and when we're out in public, people can't help but smile when they see us.

Kennedy has rolled over three times this past week, from stomach to back each time.

Last week we had fun celebrating Maddie's birthday! Her aunt Alli and I spent hours making the requested Dora the Explorer cake.

Maddie got way too many presents--including a Cinderella dress-up costume from Grandma...

and Toy Story pull-string dolls, Jessie & Woody, from her mom & dad. Maddie thinks she is a cowgirl just like Jessie.

As if that wasn't enough fun, we celebrated with her friends at the Kangaroo Zoo the next day.

Yesterday, we had fun in the water at the annual Hansen Family Reunion. First, Maddie got drenched at the park's drinking fountain while trying to cool off with her cousins. Then we all took a refreshing dip in the pool--even little Kennedy. She seemed to enjoy her first time swimming, and she looked adorable in her teeny weeny bikini!

This week we have started potty training again, after a failed attempt last fall. Luckily, Maddie is much more ready this time around and has had some great success! We still have more practice ahead of us, but each day seems to get a little better. She loves watching her potty movies, "Potty Power" and "No More Diapers." I think her daddy loves singing those catchy potty songs even more than she does!

A Day at the Zoo

A week ago we were invited to go to the Hogle Zoo with Aaron's MBA program. We had fun despite the 100 degree temperature! We made it a quick trip because it was so hot & difficult to keep the baby out of the sun. Thank goodness for the zoo's giant water fans that spray mist in your face! We look forward to going back again once it cools down a little.

Blessing Day

We blessed Kennedy in church on Sunday. It was a perfect day! The blessing was beautiful, and the baby didn't make a peep. We were grateful for so many of our family members and friends who came. Afterwards, we had a nice brunch in our backyard, which looked great thanks to Aaron's many landscaping hours.

Two Month Checkup

Kennedy had her two-month checkup yesterday. She weighs 11 pounds 14 ounces (greater than 75% of girls her age) and is 23 1/2 inches long (90%). Her head is in the 55%, unlike her older sister whose head has always been 100% or off the charts. The nurse couldn't get over how cute our little baby is!

I was as prepared as I could be for her first set of vaccinations, but poor little Kennedy had no idea what was coming. She screamed so hard when she got the four shots; it broke my heart since she never cries like that. Luckily she calmed down fairly quickly, but she kept letting out intermittant wails as if to tell me how bad it was. Aside from crying a little bit easier than usual, she seems to be fine today.
